 Inside the restoration continues. Replacing carpets, wallpaper and painting the great wrought iron work (that iron bamboo! The palm trees!). Queen Victoria ratted the good bits and took them away when she closed the Pavilion, they're being replaced with reproductions and some of the originals on loan. You just want to lie on the floor of the music room and look up. One of the guides told us that the buildings were used as a hospital for wounded Indian soldiers from the Western Front in WW1. The music room was used as a recovery room after surgery (held in the Great Kitchen). The story goes that on waking up, the soldiers thought that they'd gone to heaven. I believe it. |
